Harambee Starlets continued their perfect run at the 2024 CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship with a clinical 4-0 victory over South Sudan at the Azam Sports Complex on Wednesday evening.
The win marks Kenya’s third straight victory in the round-robin tournament, keeping them unbeaten and unbreached, with 11 goals scored and none conceded. The result places the Starlets firmly at the top of the standings with nine points and a goal difference of +11.
Kenya got off to a flying start when Faith Mboya capitalized on a defensive error in the second minute, hammering home a powerful strike from inside the box. The early goal set the tone for a dominant first half, though Kenya failed to convert several promising chances to widen the gap before the break.
Violet Wanyonyi extended the lead in the 46th minute with a crisp low shot from outside the box, reinforcing the Starlets’ control of the match. Martha Amunyolet then added her fourth goal of the tournament in the 65th minute, capping a well-executed short corner routine.
In stoppage time, Amunyolet turned provider, whipping in a dangerous corner that South Sudan’s goalkeeper failed to clear, allowing Elizabeth Ochaka to head in unmarked and seal the emphatic win.
The result puts pressure on hosts Tanzania, who sat second on six points with a goal difference of +10 ahead of their clash with Uganda on Wednesday night. To reclaim the top spot, Tanzania must defeat Uganda by at least two goals without conceding.
The final round of the competition promises fireworks, as Kenya and Tanzania face off on Saturday in a clash that could determine the tournament champions. With the CECAFA Championship played in a round-robin format, every goal and point remains critical.
Kenya are gunning for their second CECAFA title, having won their maiden crown in 2019, while Tanzania, the record champions with two titles, are hoping to reclaim regional supremacy on home soil.
