Family of Kenyan Officer Killed in Haiti Road Crash Shares Final Conversation
The family of Corporal Kennedy Mutuku, a Kenyan police officer who died in a traffic accident in Haiti on August 31, 2025, has spoken publicly for the first time since the tragedy. Mutuku was serving with the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti at the time of the incident.
In an interview on September 4, 2025, Mutuku’s mother, Serah Ndunge, recounted her last phone call with her son, which took place on August 29. She said Mutuku expressed satisfaction with his deployment and assured her he was enjoying his time in Haiti.
“We spoke on Friday. I didn’t call him on Saturday or Sunday. He was happy and had no issues. Every time we talked, he said he really liked the experience,” Ndunge stated.
Mutuku, a father of two, was expected to return to Kenya in November for his annual leave to reunite with his family. The family is now appealing to the Kenyan government for assistance in repatriating his remains.
“We need full support to give our son a dignified and honorable burial. That is our main request from the government,” a relative said.
Details of the Fatal Accident
Corporal Mutuku died in a road accident around 5:00 p.m. on August 31 along the Kenscoff-Pétion-Ville road in the Pèlerin 9 area of Port-au-Prince. The crash occurred during a recovery operation involving two MaxxPro armored vehicles. One vehicle, while towing the other, experienced mechanical failure and collided, resulting in Mutuku’s death, the deaths of two civilians, and injuries to eight other MSS personnel, three of whom sustained critical injuries.
Kenya National Police Service Confirms Death
The Kenya National Police Service (NPS) issued a statement expressing profound sorrow over Mutuku’s passing. The service confirmed that he was a member of the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) and died in the line of duty during the recovery mission. The NPS extended condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues and pledged to support the family and provide medical care for the injured officers.
