Kenya Police FC have etched their name in history after winning their maiden FKF Kenya Premier League title with a narrow 1-0 victory over Shabana FC on Sunday, June 15. The win, courtesy of a second-half header by Brian Okoth, sealed a remarkable season for the 11-year-old club and ended the long-standing dominance of Gor Mahia and Tusker FC.
Needing just a draw to secure the title, the Law Enforcers held their nerve against a spirited Shabana side playing purely for pride. Okoth’s decisive goal ensured Police finished top of the table, marking a stunning turnaround for a team that was playing second-tier football just three years ago.
Founded in 2014 and promoted to the top tier in 2021, Kenya Police FC—nicknamed Makarao—were once written off as relegation candidates. But they silenced critics with an impressive third-place finish in the 2023–24 season, a run that also saw them clinch the FKF President’s Cup and qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup.
Their ascension to champions was shaped in large part by the appointment of Burundian tactician Etienne Ndayiragije in November 2024. His leadership and tactical acumen transformed Police into a formidable side, both defensively solid and tactically disciplined.
While Gor Mahia won their final game 3-2 against Ulinzi Stars, it was a case of too little too late. The record 20-time champions will rue dropped points earlier in the campaign, including a crucial 1-1 draw against bitter rivals AFC Leopards on June 2 in Homa Bay that ultimately cost them the title.
Shabana FC, who had briefly entered the title conversation late in the season, faded out of contention but still posed a tough final hurdle for Police. However, their overzealous fanbase was left disappointed as Police defended resolutely to preserve their lead and see out the match.
With the league title comes not just glory, but also significant rewards: a Ksh5 million prize, the prestigious league trophy, and a place in the 2024–25 CAF Champions League—the continent’s premier club competition.
Kenya Police FC’s victory signals a changing of the guard in Kenyan football. From newcomers to champions in less than a decade, they’ve proven that with the right investment, leadership, and ambition, new giants can rise.
