Suba North Member of Parliament Millie Odhiambo has called for an urgent investigation into the death of a man in police custody at Kipasi Police Post in Homa Bay County.
The deceased, identified as Calvin Omondi Onditi, was reportedly found dead in a police holding cell on the morning of Sunday, June 16, a few hours after his arrest the previous night.
According to local police, Omondi had been arrested in Ndhuru village, Ndhiwa constituency, over allegations of bestiality and was being held at Kipasi station when he was found dead. Authorities claim the incident was a suicide.
In a public statement, MP Odhiambo said:
“I am calling on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to dig deep into this matter and give us a conclusive report. Too many young men are dying in custody under suspicious circumstances. This must stop.”
She urged the public to remain calm and allow investigative agencies to complete their work, noting the importance of awaiting an official postmortem report.
Odhiambo further stated:
“There is a growing pattern of alleged suicides in our police cells, and it must not be allowed to continue unchallenged.”
She also encouraged residents to cooperate with investigators and refrain from speculation as the inquiry proceeds.
As of June 17, IPOA has not yet issued a public statement on the incident. A postmortem examination is expected to determine the exact cause of death.
