Harambee Stars’ Manzur Okwaro Earns High Praise for Versatility in CHAN 2024
Captain Aboud Omar and Coach Benni McCarthy Commend Young Defender’s Impact
Manzur Okwaro has emerged as a key figure in Kenya’s Harambee Stars squad during the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), receiving commendations from both team captain Aboud Omar and head coach Benni McCarthy for his adaptability and influence on the pitch.
The 20-year-old defender, primarily positioned at the back, has been deployed in midfield across all three of Kenya’s matches so far. His performances have been pivotal in securing a 1-0 victory over DR Congo, a 1-1 draw with Angola, and a recent 1-0 win against Morocco at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
Speaking after the win against Morocco on August 10, Aboud Omar highlighted Okwaro’s exceptional talent and versatility. “Manzur is energetic and has embraced every role given to him, whether as a center-back, left-back, or midfielder,” Omar said. “He is a valuable utility player for our squad, and we are fortunate to have him. He represents the future of Kenyan football, and we must protect and support him.”
Omar further emphasized Okwaro’s importance to the team’s dynamics, noting that his ability to fill multiple positions provides tactical flexibility. “If Ryan [Ryan Ogam] had run out of energy, Manzur could have stepped in as a striker. That’s how adaptable he is,” Omar added.
Coach Benni McCarthy also praised Okwaro’s contributions, particularly his role in disrupting the opposition’s strategy. “Against DR Congo, we needed someone strong, quick, and intelligent to break their supply to the big No. 9. Manzur fulfilled that role perfectly,” McCarthy explained. “He combines physical strength, technical skill, and fearless play-qualities essential for our team.”
Okwaro’s consistent displays have not only earned him recognition from his captain and coach but have also established him as one of the most promising talents in the Harambee Stars lineup at CHAN 2024. His ability to perform under pressure and adapt to different roles continues to be a significant asset for Kenya’s campaign in the tournament.
