Kenya U20 midfielder Aldrine Kibet is on the brink of a historic move to Spanish LaLiga side Celta Vigo, potentially becoming only the third Kenyan to feature in Spain’s top flight after McDonald Mariga and Michael Olunga.
Sources reveal that Kibet’s parents flew to Spain over the weekend to finalize the transfer from Nastic Sports Academy, where the 18-year-old has been developing his talent over the past year.
If the deal is completed, Kibet will join Celta Vigo, a club renowned for developing young talent and competing in one of the world’s most elite football leagues.
The midfielder’s move would mark a significant moment for Kenyan football, echoing the path of McDonald Mariga, who was the first Kenyan to feature in LaLiga. Mariga, now the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Vice President, was loaned to Real Sociedad by Inter Milan during the 2011/2012 season. He made over 10 appearances for the Basque club during his stint.
Another trailblazer was Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga, who joined Girona FC in 2017 on loan from Chinese side Guizhou Zhicheng. Olunga made headlines after becoming the first Kenyan to score a LaLiga hat-trick, netting three goals in a dominant 6-0 win against Las Palmas.
Now, Aldrine Kibet looks set to follow in those footsteps. The former St. Anthony’s Boys Kitale student has consistently impressed scouts with his creativity, composure, and football intelligence, traits that could soon be on display in LaLiga.
Kibet’s move would not only elevate his career but also inspire a new generation of Kenyan footballers seeking to break into the global stage.
Celta Vigo has not officially confirmed the signing, but the final steps of the transfer are said to be underway.
