Tusker FC forward Ryan Ogam has revealed that encouragement from Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy played a crucial role in his match-winning goal during Kenya’s 1-0 victory over Morocco at the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024).
Ogam, who started in place of Austin Odhiambo-already a two-goal scorer in the tournament-netted the only goal in the 42nd minute. Following his strike, Harambee Stars maintained a solid defensive stance to secure the win and strengthen their position in the group stage.
Reflecting on the match, Ogam shared how McCarthy’s pre-game advice inspired him to focus fully on the game without overthinking his time on the pitch. The 20-year-old striker acknowledged the significant impact McCarthy, a former top-level striker and Manchester United coach, has had on his development.
“When I started my career, I never saw myself as a striker, but with Benni’s guidance, I am gradually becoming one of the best,” Ogam said. “He often tells me I remind him of his playing days, which motivates me a lot.”
Ogam added, “Before the Morocco game, Benni told me to give my all and not worry about the minutes I play. That message helped me stay focused and deliver when it mattered.”
Ogam also revealed that he began his football journey as a defensive midfielder before transitioning to a striker role about a year ago. His recent performances, including the crucial goal against Morocco, have boosted his confidence.
“I thank God for the goal. My morale is high, and I hope to keep scoring as we advance in the tournament,” he stated. “Benni McCarthy’s support in training and mentorship is helping me improve every day.”
The striker also dedicated the victory to the thousands of Kenyan fans who turned out in large numbers to support the team. “The fans’ support has been incredible, and this win is for them. Their presence kept growing as the match went on, and it really inspired us,” Ogam noted.
Looking Ahead to Zambia Clash
With Harambee Stars preparing for their final group match against Zambia on Sunday, August 17, Ogam is eager to continue making an impact and hopes to add to his goal tally.
Kenya’s win over Morocco marks a significant step toward securing a spot in the CHAN 2024 quarterfinals, with Ogam’s emergence as a reliable striker a promising development for the team’s campaign.
