Bayer Leverkusen have officially appointed Erik ten Hag as their new head coach, marking a pivotal shift following Xabi Alonso’s departure to manage Real Madrid. The Dutch tactician has signed a contract running until June 2027, ushering in a new era for the Bundesliga giants.
Ten Hag returns to the dugout after a seven-month hiatus, having been dismissed by Manchester United in October 2024. Despite early promise—securing both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup—his tenure at Old Trafford ended after a rocky start to the 2024–25 campaign.
Before his time in England, the 55-year-old enjoyed a decorated spell with Ajax Amsterdam, where he won three Eredivisie titles and led the Dutch side to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in 2019. His tactical precision and player development credentials made him a sought-after candidate across Europe.
Leverkusen’s sporting director Simon Rolfes expressed confidence in the appointment, stating:
“With Erik ten Hag, we have brought in an experienced coach with impressive success on the pitch. His six title wins at Ajax were exceptional.”
Ten Hag now inherits a Leverkusen side that finished second in the Bundesliga this season, having made history in 2023–24 by winning the title unbeaten under Alonso. His appointment is seen as a strategic move to maintain that momentum domestically and in Europe.
In his first public remarks, Ten Hag voiced admiration for the club’s ambition:
“Bayer are one of the best clubs in Germany and also among the top clubs in Europe. The club offers outstanding conditions, and I’ve been very impressed with the management’s vision. I’ve come to Leverkusen to continue with the ambition shown in recent years.”
This marks Ten Hag’s fifth senior managerial post, following roles at Go Ahead Eagles, Bayern Munich II, FC Utrecht, Ajax, and Manchester United.
Leverkusen fans and football analysts alike will be watching closely as Ten Hag begins a new chapter, tasked with building on Alonso’s legacy and keeping the club at the forefront of European football.
