The National Police Service (NPS) has officially confirmed the arrest of Gitonga Mukunji, the Member of Parliament for Manyatta Constituency, in connection with the July 7 Saba Saba protests.
In a statement released on Monday, July 7, 2025, the NPS listed Mukunji among 567 individuals arrested nationwide, accusing them of involvement in acts of lawlessness during the demonstrations. The MP’s arrest comes amid growing scrutiny of police response to youth-led protests against government policies, including the recently withdrawn Finance Bill.
Additionally, a number of suspects have been arrested, including Hon. Gitonga Mukunji, MP for Manyatta Constituency,” read the statement from the NPS.
Charges and Investigations Ongoing
The NPS did not disclose specific charges against the MP but indicated that all those arrested would be subjected to investigation in accordance with the law. It remains unclear whether Mukunji has since been released or formally charged.
His arrest has raised concerns about the targeting of elected leaders who were either participating in or showing solidarity with the protests.
Police Provide Protest Casualty Update
The statement also outlined the official toll of the day’s protests, which were held in multiple towns and cities across the country to mark Saba Saba Day:
- 11 civilians killed
- 11 civilians injured
- 52 police officers injured
- 12 police vehicles damaged
- 3 government vehicles damaged
- 4 civilian vehicles damaged
- 567 people arrested
While the NPS praised its officers for “exceptional restraint and professionalism,” civil society organizations and human rights defenders have questioned the accuracy of these figures and accused security agencies of excessive use of force. Independent monitors suggest the death toll may be significantly higher, with many unarmed protesters shot at close range or while retreating.
