Mvurya Hands Over Refurbished Kasarani Stadium as Kenya Prepares for CHAN 2025 Kickoff
Kenya on Monday achieved a key milestone in its preparations to co-host the 2025 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN), with Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya officially handing over the refurbished Kasarani Stadium to the tournament’s Local Organising Committee (LOC).
Kasarani Stadium, which will serve as the main venue and host the final match on August 30, is now fully compliant with Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards, according to Mvurya. The handover ceremony marks Kenya’s readiness to stage Africa’s second-tier international football competition, alongside co-hosts Uganda and Tanzania.

“Work here is complete, and we will hand it over to the Local Organising Committee Chair, as they also have important tasks to carry forward,” said Mvurya during the event.
The Sports CS also confirmed that the Ulinzi Sports Complex is operational as a training ground, while work at Nyayo Stadium is nearly complete, with the perimeter wall installation in its final stages.
“Inside the stadium, no work is pending. Starting tomorrow, our focus will shift to preparing the Harambee Stars and giving them the necessary support through the Football Kenya Federation (FKF),” Mvurya added.
Vandalism Concerns and Security Measures
Mvurya used the platform to condemn recent acts of vandalism targeting public infrastructure, calling on Kenyans to protect facilities developed using taxpayers’ money.
“It is unfortunate that after investing public money to revamp infrastructure, the same public comes back to destroy it. As Kenyans, we must protect these facilities,” he said.
To curb such incidents, he announced that additional CCTV cameras and other security enhancements would be installed across major sports venues.
“Even in a democratic country, we must express ourselves without damaging public and private property,” Mvurya warned.
