The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a public notice of possible traffic disruption along two major highways: the Nairobi–Nakuru–Mau Summit (A8) and the Nairobi–Maai Mahiu–Naivasha (A8 South) highways, starting Thursday, July 10 to Sunday, July 20, 2025.
According to a statement by KeNHA, the temporary interruptions are part of a scheduled data survey and interview exercise aimed at gathering critical transport data for planning and infrastructure development.
During the data survey, motorists may be stopped to share their journey details,” the agency noted.
The specific data being collected includes:
- Axle Load Surveys
- Origin-Destination Surveys
- Camera-Based Classified Cross-Sectional Counts
- Turning Movement Counts
KeNHA is urging all road users along the affected corridors to cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals who will be stationed at strategic points to facilitate the exercise.
This traffic advisory comes on the heels of a recently approved proposal by KeNHA and the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Committee to dual the 175-kilometre Nairobi–Mau Summit road, at an estimated cost of KSh170 billion.
A significant portion of the financing for the dual carriageway project was secured during President William Ruto’s visit to Beijing, China in April 2025, where infrastructure partnerships topped the agenda.
The Nairobi–Mau Summit corridor is one of the busiest and most economically critical highways in the region, linking Nairobi to western Kenya and beyond. The data survey is expected to inform planning and construction logistics as Kenya embarks on upgrading the corridor into a modern dual carriageway.
KeNHA reiterated that the survey and traffic interruptions are temporary and necessary for the long-term goal of improving road efficiency, safety, and economic connectivity.
