Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Chairman Sasha Mutai has stepped down from his position, citing a hostile boardroom environment and a commitment to personal integrity. His resignation was tendered during a Special General Meeting (SGM) held on May 30, 2025, at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi.
Mutai, who has served the union as director, vice chairman, and most recently as chairman since March 2023, said his decision was prompted by escalating wrangles within the board and an orchestrated campaign to remove him. “Some members were looking to eject me as chairman… I read the mood in the room and decided to tender my resignation,” Mutai said.
The embattled former chairman referenced specific allegations against his colleagues, including the use of forged Credit Reference Bureau (CRB) certificates by three board members and refusal by two others to vacate office despite hitting their term limits. “They all ganged up, but unfortunately it’s democracy,” he remarked.
Despite the upheaval, Mutai defended his record, highlighting successes such as reviving the Kenya Sevens team, attracting new sponsors, and championing player welfare. “I love this game. I’ve captained teams, been director, vice chair, and chair. I leave with my head held high,” he stated.
He also lamented the failure of the board to address broader governance concerns raised during the SGM, which he believes were swept aside in favor of ousting him. “The truth shall set you free,” he said, adding, “I cannot and will not compromise my values and integrity.”
Mutai acknowledged that his straightforward approach may not have suited political maneuvering within the union. “Maybe I failed as a politician. I speak the truth, and I won’t change that just to remain chairman.”
While stepping back from official leadership, Mutai affirmed his lifelong commitment to the sport. “I’ll always support rugby — the players, the clubs, and the national teams. This isn’t the last you’ve seen of me.”
His resignation comes as World Rugby expresses concern over governance issues in the KRU, urging transparency and accountability to secure the sport’s future in Kenya.
