Kenya is mourning the loss of Mildred Wanyama, a devoted mother and matriarch to one of the country’s most prominent sporting families. She was the mother of Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Vice President McDonald Mariga, former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama, and Kenya women’s national basketball team player Mercy Wanyama.
Her death was confirmed on Saturday morning in a statement by her son McDonald Mariga, who said the family is deeply saddened by the peaceful passing of their beloved mother.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, who left us peacefully today morning. We are currently making arrangements and will share more details soon. Thank you,” read Mariga’s statement.
Mildred Wanyama was widely admired not only as the pillar of a sports dynasty but as a quiet force of inspiration whose values of discipline, faith, and resilience shaped her children’s exceptional careers. Her support was instrumental in Victor’s rise to captain the national team and play top-flight football in Europe, Mercy’s success on the basketball court, and Mariga’s groundbreaking stint as the first Kenyan to win the UEFA Champions League.
The loss has triggered an outpouring of grief and tributes from across Kenya’s sports community. FKF officials, fellow athletes, fans, and public leaders have conveyed their condolences, describing her as a mother of the nation’s talent.
The Wanyama family has requested privacy as they plan final rites, with further details expected in the coming days.
