Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has called on Nairobi Regional Police Commander George Sedah to provide security for peaceful demonstrators planning to take to the streets on Wednesday, June 25, amid growing concerns over infiltration by violent goons.
Sakaja, who has recently faced accusations of sponsoring gangs to attack protesters, strongly denied the claims, terming them “false” and “desperate” tactics from unnamed political opponents. Instead, he shifted focus to what he described as “well-known individuals” with a history of orchestrating chaos during demonstrations.
“I urge all Kenyans and the people of Nairobi to reject violence and criminal behavior as they take to the streets this coming week,” Sakaja stated.
The governor revealed that he has already held talks with the Nairobi police command to ensure that peaceful demonstrators are protected in accordance with the law.
“I have spoken to the command of the police to assure peaceful demonstrators that they will be protected as they express their rights — and that must be done within the confines of the law, as enshrined in our Constitution,” he added.
Sakaja emphasized that maintaining law and order remains the responsibility of the police and condemned any attempts to politicize the protests or weaponize violence for personal or political gain.
“Let the police do their job to protect life and property. I have never used violence to gain power, and I never will. My record speaks for itself. These accusations are not only false; they’re a desperate attempt by certain well-known individuals whose political careers are marked by violence, intimidation, and chaos.”
The governor’s remarks come amid heightened political tension ahead of the planned June 25 demonstrations, which have been called by opposition activists and civil society groups to protest the Finance Bill 2025 and police brutality.
Security agencies are under pressure to balance protection of public freedoms with maintaining order, as past protests have seen violent clashes, looting, and the use of live ammunition.
Governor Sakaja has urged all parties — including demonstrators and police — to uphold peace, emphasizing that Nairobi must remain a safe space for democratic expression.
