Westlands Member of Parliament Tim Wanyonyi has clarified that he intends to run for the Bungoma gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election, laying to rest speculation that he could again pursue the Nairobi governorship. Wanyonyi, who has served in Nairobi’s political landscape for over a decade, confirmed that his focus has now shifted to his home county.
Speaking during an interview with Radio 47 on Monday, July 7, Wanyonyi said his decision followed extensive consultations with political leaders in both Nairobi and Bungoma, as well as discussions with his party leadership. “Politics has a lot of things. Nairobi, I have done my politics all along for all this time, but Bungoma is home,” he said, adding that the two regions have different needs that require tailored approaches.
Wanyonyi stated that he has not been confused about his political direction, but has been carefully weighing all factors before making a final announcement. “I can either vie in Nairobi or Bungoma— even the law allows that. For now, I’m in Nairobi, but I will announce soon,” he said.
Pressed by the interviewer on where his heart truly lies, Wanyonyi offered a direct response: “I am ready to go and serve the people of Bungoma. That’s my stand.”
The MP further reflected on his previous bid for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in 2022, which he withdrew from after internal party negotiations. “I remember the last time I was running for the Governor of Nairobi, I even launched my campaign. I was endorsed by pastors and residents, and they assured me of their support,” Wanyonyi recalled.
“But when I went ahead, there emerged some complications that led me not to be on the Governor’s ballot paper,” he added. “I want to assure people that this time, I will make sure I complete that journey.”
His announcement positions him as one of the most high-profile early entrants into the Bungoma gubernatorial race, and could shake up the local political dynamics. Wanyonyi’s national experience, including his strong legislative track record and visibility in Nairobi County, could give him a significant advantage in a race that is expected to draw several contenders.
The Bungoma seat is currently held by Governor Kenneth Lusaka, and it remains to be seen whether he will seek re-election or endorse a successor. Either way, Wanyonyi’s entry signals a serious contest is in the making for 2027.
