At Least 21 Feared Dead in Bus Overturn at Coptic Roundabout on Kisumu-Kakamega Road
A tragic bus accident at the Coptic Roundabout on the Kisumu-Kakamega highway has left at least 21 people presumed dead. The incident occurred on Friday, August 8, 2025, involving a bus carrying mourners returning from a funeral in Nyahera, Kisumu County.
Nyanza Regional Traffic Commander Peter Maina confirmed the fatalities, noting that several others sustained injuries. Preliminary reports suggest the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and overturn. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with passengers being ejected from the bus upon impact. In addition to the deceased, five individuals are reported to be in critical condition, while 15 others are receiving treatment for various injuries.
The bus involved belonged to a local high school.
Coptic Roundabout: A Known Accident Blackspot
The Coptic Roundabout has long been identified as a hazardous location, with numerous accidents recorded over the years. Local residents attribute the frequent crashes to poor road design, inadequate signage, and reckless driving. The steep descent from Riat Hills leading into the roundabout poses a significant challenge, particularly for heavy commercial vehicles such as buses and trucks, which often overturn in this area.
This year alone, the roundabout has witnessed three major accidents:
- On July 15, a bus from Uzima University carrying students and staff overturned while navigating the roundabout. The crash resulted in one fatality and 46 injuries. The driver reportedly lost control, causing the vehicle to leave the road and land in a ditch.
- On July 3, a lorry traveling from Vihiga to Kisumu overturned at the same location, killing three people and critically injuring five others who were admitted to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.
- In April, an Easy Coach bus accident at the roundabout claimed the life of a high school student and injured several passengers.
Authorities continue to investigate the latest crash, with further updates expected.
