Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres has officially been unveiled as an Arsenal player in Singapore, just a day after completing his £64 million transfer from Sporting Lisbon. Though not named in the matchday squad, Gyokeres
Arsenal’s newest signing, Viktor Gyokeres, was officially unveiled in front of fans in Singapore on Sunday, just hours after sealing his £64 million transfer from Sporting Lisbon.
The 27-year-old Swedish international walked out to a thunderous ovation at the National Stadium before Arsenal’s friendly against Newcastle United, despite not being part of the 28-man matchday squad.
Fans waved Swedish flags, held signs such as “WELCOME GYOKERES,” and several were already spotted wearing his new No. 14 shirt — a number previously worn by club legends Thierry Henry and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Many also joined in his trademark ‘mask’ celebration as he greeted the crowd.
Protracted Transfer Saga Ends in Singapore Unveiling
Gyokeres’ move to Arsenal capped off a summer-long transfer saga. Sporting Lisbon initially rejected a £60 million offer and threatened disciplinary action after Gyokeres failed to report for pre-season, signalling his intent to leave. Arsenal eventually returned with an improved deal offering more upfront, which sealed the agreement.
Gyokeres arrives with an incredible record of 97 goals in 102 matches since joining Sporting from Coventry City in 2023. He was one of Europe’s most sought-after centre-forwards, and Arsenal identified him as their top target to solve their long-standing striker gap.
“We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Viktor Gyokeres to the club,” said Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
“His consistency, clinical edge, and intelligent movement make him a constant threat. He’s the striker we’ve needed.”
Arsenal’s Summer Spending Nears £210 Million
Sporting Director Andrea Berta praised the signing:
“Viktor is an exceptional talent and fits perfectly into our vision. His physicality, work ethic, and winning mentality will make him a key part of this team.”
Gyokeres becomes just the third true centre-forward Arsenal have signed in over five years — after Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz. The urgency to bring in a striker grew after both were sidelined last season, with midfielder Mikel Merino occasionally playing up front.
With Gyokeres’ arrival, Arsenal’s summer spending now totals nearly £210 million, with other high-profile additions including:
- Martin Zubimendi – £65m
- Noni Madueke – £52m
- Christian Norgaard – £15m
- Cristhian Mosquera – £13m
- Kepa Arrizabalaga – £5m
What’s Next for Gyokeres?
Gyokeres will soon begin training with his new teammates and is expected to make his first appearance later during the pre-season tour in Asia. Arsenal fans will be eager to see their new No.14 in action as the Gunners aim for Premier League and Champions League success in the 2025/26 season.
