The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has commenced a three-day inspection tour in Kenya to assess the country’s preparedness for co-hosting the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), scheduled for August 2–30.
The inspection team is evaluating key infrastructure, including stadiums, training facilities, accommodations, and medical services. This assessment is crucial to ensure that Kenya meets the standards required to host a successful continental tournament.
Kenya, alongside Uganda and Tanzania, was awarded the hosting rights for CHAN 2025 as a precursor to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which the trio will also co-host. The joint hosting aims to showcase East Africa’s capability to organize major football events and to promote regional integration through sports.
In preparation for CHAN, Kenya has undertaken significant renovations of its major stadiums. The Nyayo National Stadium has seen upgrades such as enhanced floodlighting, improved drainage systems, and refurbished changing rooms. Similarly, the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, has undergone refurbishments to meet international standards.
CAF’s inspection will inform the final decisions on match venues and other logistical arrangements. The organization has emphasized the importance of timely completion of all preparations to ensure the tournament’s success.
The CHAN tournament, featuring national teams composed exclusively of players active in their respective domestic leagues, serves as a platform to showcase local talent. The successful hosting of CHAN 2025 is expected to boost Kenya’s football profile and inspire further development of the sport in the region.
