The Kenyan government, through the Ministry of Youth Affairs, the Creative Economy, and Sports, has officially assumed responsibility for the long-stalled Isiolo Stadium project, which has remained incomplete for nearly six years.

During a comprehensive site inspection last Thursday, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya directed Sports Kenya to develop new architectural designs for a modern stadium that meets international standards within two weeks. Once these designs are submitted, the government will initiate the necessary procedures to commence construction.

The decision to take over the project follows recent protests by local youths demanding the completion of the 10,000-seater stadium, which has become an eyesore and a symbol of unfulfilled promises. The youths expressed frustration over the delay, noting that the incomplete facility denies them opportunities to develop their sporting talents.

Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dullo, who accompanied the CS during the inspection, welcomed the government’s intervention. She highlighted that completing the stadium will rejuvenate the hopes and aspirations of the local community, particularly the youth passionate about sports and talent development.

The Isiolo Stadium project, initially budgeted at KSh 345 million, had stalled due to financial challenges faced by the county government. The national government’s takeover aims to ensure the facility is completed to serve the community effectively.

This initiative is part of a broader government effort to upgrade sports infrastructure across the country, especially as Kenya prepares to co-host major continental tournaments, including the 2024 African Nations Championship and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The revamped Isiolo Stadium is expected to feature a VIP section, changing rooms for home and away teams, and proper roofing to shield spectators from harsh weather conditions. Additionally, the government plans to construct a talent academy in Garbatula Ward at a cost of KSh 55 million to further support youth development in the region.

The government’s commitment to completing the Isiolo Stadium underscores its dedication to nurturing sports talent and providing adequate facilities for athletes across the country.
