The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has opened an investigation into a deadly police shooting in Angama Mara, Narok County, that left three people dead and seven others seriously injured.

The incident occurred on Thursday, June 5, 2025, in Lolkuruk Village, Transmara, Kilgoris Constituency. According to early reports, police allegedly opened fire on a group of individuals said to have invaded private land within the Angama Conservancy.

In a statement released on Friday, IPOA Chairperson Issack Hassan confirmed that a Rapid Response Team had been dispatched to the area to gather facts surrounding the confrontation. The injured victims were taken to nearby hospitals, including Lolgorian Subcounty Hospital, for treatment of gunshot wounds.

“In line with the provisions of Section 7(1)(a)(x) of the IPOA Act, CAP 86 of the Laws of Kenya, which mandates the investigation of deaths and serious injuries resulting from police actions, the dispatched team has been instructed to gather all information relevant to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the IPOA statement read.

The Authority extended condolences to the families of the deceased and expressed solidarity with those injured. It further urged calm among residents as investigations proceed.

“The Authority extends its condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones and to those who were injured. It also appeals to residents to remain calm and allow the due process of law to take its course,” said IPOA.

IPOA also reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and fairness, vowing to update the public on its findings once the probe is concluded.

“Across its work, IPOA commits to remain independent, impartial, fair, and apolitical in all its investigations,” added Hassan.

Once complete, the investigation will result in recommendations to relevant State agencies, including potential disciplinary or prosecutorial actions, if warranted.

The shooting has sparked renewed concerns over the use of force by security officers during land-related conflicts, which remain sensitive in many parts of Kenya’s rift and conservancy regions.
