Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi was discovered unconscious on Monday morning in a coffee plantation in Kibichoi, Kiambu County, approximately 12 hours after his reported abduction outside a church in Mugutha. Eyewitnesses, including his wife, Ann Koimburi, stated that two men in plain clothes, posing as worshippers, accosted the MP as he greeted congregants after the service. The assailants forced him into a waiting Subaru Forester with altered number plates. Ann Koimburi sustained injuries while attempting to intervene.
Upon discovery, Koimburi was dressed in the same navy blue suit he wore during the church service and appeared to have been beaten. He was taken to a hospital in Ruiru for treatment then Karen hospital for specialised treatment.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has denied any involvement in the incident. However, police sources revealed that Koimburi had been sought since Friday in connection with a land fraud case. An earlier attempt to arrest him reportedly failed when he evaded capture by fleeing on a motorcycle.
Police are investigating the possibility that the abduction was staged. They are questioning how those who found Koimburi knew his location and are seeking to interview the MP for more information.
Koimburi had been a vocal critic of the 2024 Finance Bill, which proposed several tax increases and economic measures that critics claim would burden ordinary citizens. He claimed that MPs were offered Ksh.2 million to vote in favor of the bill, an allegation that sparked controversy and led to calls for disciplinary action against him.
Following his stance, Koimburi reported receiving threats and being trailed by unknown individuals. He alleged that his political stand led to him being sidelined in the Kenya Kwanza Coalition.
The incident has elicited varied reactions, with some political figures condemning it as an act of political persecution. The motive behind the alleged abduction remains unclear.
