Kenyan striker Masoud Juma has ended his brief stint with Iranian giants Esteghlal FC after helping the club secure the prestigious Hazfi Cup. Although his contract had an option to extend for another year, the club decided not to renew after the forward scored three goals in 17 appearances across all competitions.
Juma, who signed a short-term deal until the end of the season, was given a fitting farewell on Thursday in the Hazfi Cup final against Malavan. Esteghlal clinched the trophy thanks to Roozbeh Cheshmi’s extra-time winner. Juma started the match under coach Mojtaba Jabbari, playing 77 minutes before being substituted for Joel Kojo.
“It’s a happy ending. Thanks to the blues fans. See you guys on the other side,” Juma posted on Instagram after the final.
Earlier in the week, the Harambee Stars forward had announced his impending departure with a heartfelt message to Esteghlal supporters. He expressed gratitude for the support he received despite the challenges, including recovering from a significant injury and adjusting to a difficult period at the club.
“I hate to say goodbye but when the time is right, we say. First, I want to say thank you to all of you who supported me since I arrived and sorry to those whom I didn’t meet your expectations,” Juma wrote. “I came here at a time I was coming from a big injury; it wasn’t easy but I never gave up. The timing wasn’t right. I endorse good and bad moments, but all make me strong and give hunger to work. Happy that we have one last dance and it will be a proper way to say my goodbye to you all, the blues fans deserve it.”
Juma’s move to Esteghlal last December came under the recommendation of South African coach Pitso Mosimane. However, Mosimane’s departure in January amid salary payment issues left Juma somewhat isolated. Injuries further complicated his time in Iran, ultimately leading the club to decide against extending his contract.
Despite the hurdles, Juma’s Hazfi Cup triumph remains a high point of his international club career. The former Kariobangi Sharks striker is expected to explore new opportunities as he looks ahead to the next chapter in his professional journey.
