MP Sylvanus Osoro Alleges Misappropriation of Social Health Authority Funds by Fellow Legislators
South Mugirango Member of Parliament and National Assembly Chief Whip Sylvanus Osoro has accused certain unnamed lawmakers of diverting funds from the Social Health Authority (SHA) through private medical facilities under their control.
Speaking at an event in Narok, Osoro claimed that some MPs are channeling SHA resources intended for hospitals into their own pockets. He further alleged that these funds are being used to finance press conferences and public briefings rather than healthcare services.
“There are MPs who continue to siphon money from SHA, which is meant for hospitals. Some own medical facilities and claim to conduct frequent operations, yet they divert the funds to hold press conferences,” Osoro stated.
Osoro also targeted former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his political allies, accusing them of corruption linked to Nyeri County. He specifically alleged that Gachagua misappropriated resources from the county and from the estate of his late brother, former Nyeri County Governor Nderitu Gachagua.
“There are corrupt legislators, and I want to warn Wamunyoro [a nickname for the former Deputy President]. He lacks the moral standing to speak on corruption. He is the one who stole from Nyeri County and from his late brother. His record is steeped in corruption,” Osoro asserted.
During the impeachment proceedings against Gachagua, Osoro had previously claimed that after the death of Nderitu Gachagua, the former Mathira MP misused funds from the late governor’s estate, leaving the family with nothing.
The Chief Whip also issued a stern warning to individuals and groups involved in fraudulent activities targeting the SHA, promising legal action against those implicated.
“Whether they like it or not, parliamentary and county-level SHA cartels will soon be apprehended,” Osoro declared.
These allegations come amid ongoing scrutiny of the Social Health Authority, which replaced the defunct National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF). Various health sector stakeholders have expressed concerns regarding the viability and management of the new insurance scheme.
