A celebratory atmosphere turned tragic on Monday evening when a vehicle plowed into a crowd during Liverpool FC’s Premier League victory parade, injuring nearly 50 people, including children.

The incident occurred around 6:00 PM local time on Water Street, near the iconic Liver Building, shortly after roads had been reopened following the parade. A 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area was arrested at the scene. Police have stated that the act is not being treated as terrorism and believe the suspect acted alone.

Emergency services responded swiftly, with 27 individuals hospitalized, including four children. Four victims remain in critical condition. An additional 20 people received medical attention at the scene.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and horror. One bystander recounted hearing “bumps” as the vehicle struck individuals, while others reported people being thrown into the air.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the incident, calling the scenes “appalling” and expressing gratitude to emergency services for their swift response. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and Liverpool Mayor Steve Rotheram also expressed their condolences and support for the victims.

Liverpool FC issued a statement expressing deep concern and support for those affected, stating that the club is cooperating fully with authorities during the ongoing investigation.

Authorities have urged the public to refrain from sharing graphic images or videos of the incident on social media and to provide any relevant information to assist in the investigation.

The motive behind the driver’s actions remains unclear, and investigations are ongoing.
