Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has urged Kenyan football fans to let go of past disappointments and rally behind a “new dawn” for the national team, as he set his sights firmly on a strong showing at the 2024 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) set to be held in Kenya.
The South African tactician, appointed earlier this year, said his leadership would usher in a bold era of ambition, pride, and results — declaring that the Harambee Stars will aim for nothing less than a spot in the CHAN final.
“Harambee Stars have often grappled with unfulfilled potential, and my leadership heralds a new chapter — one rooted in ambition and a desire to elevate Kenyan football to unprecedented heights,” McCarthy said.
He described the CHAN tournament as a “story waiting to be written in the vibrant colours of Kenyan pride,” urging players and fans alike to believe that this could be a defining moment in the country’s footballing history.
“We want to demonstrate our abilities and present a positive image of ourselves at CHAN. Instead of failing, we want to succeed — to reach the semifinals, and possibly the championship game. I think it is possible with enough effort,” he added.
A Style That Reflects the People
McCarthy, a former Manchester United assistant coach and one of Africa’s most respected strikers, said that Harambee Stars will play the attractive and aggressive football style Kenyan fans have long demanded.
“It’s the passion on people’s faces that shows how much they love their nation,” McCarthy said. “My vision isn’t just about winning; it’s about igniting a flame, rekindling the love affair between Kenyans and their team.”
The 47-year-old said he believes fixing the national team is key to Kenya’s broader sporting success, and he vowed to make the Harambee Stars “the greatest team in East Africa’s history.”
Friendlies Against Chad: The First Test
Kenya’s upcoming international friendlies against Chad, scheduled for June 7 and June 10 in Morocco, will offer McCarthy his first real test.
He views these matches as critical for building chemistry and instilling his footballing philosophy ahead of CHAN.
“The friendlies will not only provide a platform for individual players to shine but will also facilitate the development of team chemistry — a crucial ingredient for success in high-stakes matches,” he said.
