FIFA President Gianni Infantino Applauds Kenya’s CHAN 2024 Readiness, Announces Plans for Football Development

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has praised Kenya’s preparations for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), describing the event as a vital investment in the country’s youth and football future. Speaking at a press conference in Nairobi, Infantino dismissed perceptions that East African football is underdeveloped compared to other African regions, emphasizing the region’s growing infrastructure and passionate fan base.

“The notion that football is more advanced in West, North, or Southern Africa while East Africa lags behind is inaccurate,” Infantino stated. “Here, we witness immense passion and commitment. New stadiums are being constructed, infrastructure is improving, and with viewing figures reaching 40 million, the enthusiasm of fans clearly justifies investing in Kenyan football and its talented youth.”

FIFA to Support Football Infrastructure and Youth Academies in Kenya

Infantino also revealed FIFA’s commitment to enhancing football infrastructure across Kenya and the continent. He outlined plans to launch a national football center and academies aimed at nurturing young talent.

“We are fully dedicated to youth development and are channeling more of FIFA’s revenues into football projects in Kenya and Africa,” Infantino said. “Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup remain a crucial element of African football, and we recognize their importance in the sport’s growth.”

CAF President Patrice Motsepe Highlights Exceptional Fan Engagement

Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe commended the overwhelming support from Kenyan fans during CHAN 2024, noting that the enthusiasm sets a strong foundation for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027.

“What excites me is the significant investment over the past four decades,” Motsepe remarked. “This tournament is a key initiative to stimulate and sustain the remarkable interest we have witnessed. Reports from the Kenyan Football Federation indicate 40 million viewers and 140,000 fans gathering in fan parks, underscoring the exceptional engagement in Kenya.”

Motsepe added that this level of support provides a substantial boost to football development in the country.

CHAN Tournament: A Platform for Domestic Talent

Both Infantino and Motsepe are expected to attend the CHAN 2024 final between Madagascar and Morocco at Nairobi’s Kasarani Stadium. Since its inception in 2009, the CHAN tournament has played a pivotal role in promoting players active in their domestic leagues, enhancing the competitiveness of African football on the global stage.

This competition forms part of CAF’s broader strategy to elevate African football’s appeal to fans, broadcasters, sponsors, and partners worldwide.
