Mohamed Salah Defends Former Liverpool Teammates Amid Transfer Comparisons

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has publicly urged fans to show respect for his former teammates Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, following recent comparisons with Liverpool’s new high-profile signings.

Diaz and Nunez, who departed Liverpool this summer for Bayern Munich and Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal respectively, were contrasted unfavorably by some supporters against the club’s latest acquisitions, Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz. Both Isak and Wirtz joined Liverpool in record-breaking deals totaling approximately £241 million, generating significant excitement among the fanbase.

A Liverpool fan account on X (formerly Twitter) sparked controversy by posting an image that highlighted Isak and Wirtz in vibrant red, while Diaz and Nunez appeared faded in black, accompanied by the caption: “Name a bigger upgrade in footballing history.” This prompted Salah to respond swiftly, emphasizing the importance of honoring the contributions of his former colleagues.

“How about we celebrate the great signings without disrespecting the Premier League champions?” Salah wrote, calling for recognition of Diaz and Nunez’s impact during their time at Anfield.

Luis Diaz featured in 148 matches for Liverpool, scoring 41 goals and providing 23 assists before his £65 million transfer to Bayern Munich. He has made a strong start in Germany, netting three goals and assisting twice in his first four appearances under coach Vincent Kompany.

Darwin Nunez, sold to Al-Hilal for a reported €53 million, scored 40 goals in 143 appearances across all competitions during his three-year spell at Liverpool.

Liverpool’s recent signings include Florian Wirtz, acquired from Bayer Leverkusen for £116.5 million, and Alexander Isak, who joined from Newcastle United for a British record fee of £125 million on transfer deadline day. These investments reflect the club’s ambition to strengthen their squad following the departures of Diaz and Nunez.
