The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has confirmed that the Harambee Stars have officially withdrawn from the ongoing CECAFA Four Nations Tournament in Tanzania, citing unsuitable conditions that could affect the team’s preparation and performance.
In a statement released on Monday, FKF explained that the decision was made following recommendations by the technical bench, led by head coach Benni McCarthy, after a comprehensive assessment of the prevailing tournament conditions.
“This decision has been made following recommendations and advice from the team’s technical bench, led by Head Coach Benni McCarthy, after a thorough assessment of the prevailing conditions, which were deemed unsuitable for the team’s participation and overall preparation,” the statement read.
The federation did not elaborate on the specific concerns regarding the conditions, but emphasized that the welfare and preparedness of the players remain a priority.
The national team will now return to Kenya to resume preparations for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which Kenya is co-hosting alongside Uganda and Tanzania. FKF assured fans that focus has now fully shifted to ensuring optimal readiness for the upcoming tournament.
“The team will return to Kenya and resume preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, with full focus now shifting to ensuring optimal readiness for the assignment ahead,” FKF noted.
The withdrawal comes just days before Kenya was scheduled to face regional rivals Uganda, hosts Tanzania, and Senegal in group matches at the Karatu Stadium in Arusha.
FKF reaffirmed its commitment to providing the national team with “the best possible environment to compete and represent the country with pride.”
The decision is likely to spark mixed reactions among fans, especially given the momentum built by recent call-ups and preparations under coach McCarthy’s stewardship. However, it also reflects the federation’s renewed emphasis on structured planning and safeguarding player welfare ahead of major continental competitions.
