Liverpool are reportedly weighing up a sensational move for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak in what could become the biggest transfer in British football history.
The Reds are already expected to break the £115 million record set by Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo in 2023 with the imminent signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, in a deal that could rise to £116 million with add-ons.
But according to multiple reports, Liverpool’s hierarchy have identified Isak as their dream target to lead the line next season, amid growing doubts over Darwin Nunez’s future at Anfield. The Uruguayan forward, who managed just five goals in 30 Premier League appearances last season, is reportedly up for sale with a £59 million valuation.
Landing Isak, however, would require an astronomical fee of £150 million, as quoted by Newcastle—a figure that would obliterate all previous British transfer records.
The Sweden international has been electric since arriving at St James’ Park from Real Sociedad in 2022. He has scored an impressive 54 Premier League goals in just 86 appearances, emerging as one of the most clinical finishers in Europe.
His goal against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final sealed Newcastle’s first piece of silverware in over 70 years—a painful memory that could now push the Reds to act aggressively in the transfer market.
Despite the growing interest, Newcastle are under no pressure to sell and are reportedly in talks with Isak over a contract extension to fend off suitors.
Should Liverpool balk at the £150 million valuation, they may turn their attention to Hugo Ekitike of Eintracht Frankfurt. The 22-year-old French striker has been attracting interest from Manchester United and Chelsea as well, and is considered a relatively affordable alternative with an £85 million price tag.
United are said to be considering a player-plus-cash offer involving Joshua Zirkzee, who joined them from Bologna last summer but has struggled to make an impact, scoring only seven goals in 49 appearances.
As it stands, Liverpool’s ability to fund both the Wirtz and Isak deals in the same window remains uncertain, especially with additional interest in right-back Jeremie Frimpong.
With the transfer window heating up, all eyes will be on Anfield to see if the club can pull off not one, but potentially two record-breaking signings in the space of a few weeks.
