South African forward Thembinkosi Lorch was a standout performer in Wydad Athletic Club’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City during their opening clash at the FIFA Club World Cup, earning widespread praise for his fearless and skillful display.
Facing the reigning Premier League champions, Wydad conceded both goals in the first half. Phil Foden struck in the second minute, followed by Jeremy Doku’s effort in the 42nd. However, Lorch’s lively performance ensured Wydad remained competitive throughout.
Unfazed by the star-studded opposition, Lorch nearly stunned City goalkeeper Ederson with a daring chip in the 15th minute, an audacious effort that underlined his confidence. He continued to threaten the City defense, narrowly missing another chance in the 44th minute after carving out space inside the box.
The second half saw Lorch maintain pressure, connecting with teammates and delivering a dangerous corner that Wydad failed to capitalize on. His last notable involvement came in the 79th minute when he broke through City’s defense to create a chance, only for it to be deflected for a corner.
Despite the defeat, analysts and fans hailed Lorch’s contribution.
“He was all over the pitch, being influential, taking shots from long range, and even setting up Cassius in the first half. It was just that final product that never came,” said former Bafana Bafana striker Shaun Bartlett on post-match analysis.
“Wonderful start from him. He truly is an important player for Wydad,” added Bongani Khumalo, emphasizing Lorch’s growing role in the squad.
