ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga has summoned the party’s Nairobi County Assembly members for a consultative meeting today (Tuesday) at 10 am at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation, amid growing momentum for the impeachment of Governor Johnson Sakaja and his deputy, Njoroge Muchiri.
The invitation, sent by Majority Whip Moses Ogeto via the MCAs’ WhatsApp group, read in part:
“Good Morning, Hon Members, you are hereby invited by Party Leader, Raila Amollo Odinga, for a consultative meeting at Jaramongi Oginga Odinga Foundation (JOOF) today, September 2, 2025, as from 10.00 am. Kind Regards.”
Sakaja’s political future is now hanging by a thread, with Raila seen as the only figure capable of halting the ouster. Despite already holding two high-level meetings with county assembly leadership on Friday and Monday, Raila failed to convince the ward representatives to drop the motion, leading to today’s wider consultative session.
The numbers behind the push are swelling. As of Monday, 87 MCAs had signed in support of the impeachment motion, up from 70 last Friday, far above the 41 required to call a special sitting of the assembly. Although the house went on recess on August 7, Standing Orders allow such a sitting if requested by the Majority Leader with sufficient backing.
At the centre of the standoff are more than 20 charges the MCAs have levelled against Sakaja, including failure to release ward development and bursary funds, ignoring assembly resolutions, and sidelining oversight responsibilities.
Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai said Monday that the motion was complete and ready to be tabled.
“We have the charges ready, more than 20 substantive charges against the governor. We passed the threshold in the fifth minute of collecting signatures. This time it is a whole House initiative,” Alai told the media.
He warned that Sakaja could no longer rely on Raila’s protection:
“You know, when there is always a tiff between MCAs and the governor, he runs to Raila and gets saved. This time it will not be easier for him because the issues at hand are between him and the MCAs and not Raila.”
Similar sentiments were echoed by Roysambu MCA Sospeter Wamumbi, who accused the county executive of ignoring oversight duties.
The standoff follows a marathon meeting at Raila’s Karen residence last Friday, which was attended by the governor but ended without a breakthrough after nearly eight hours. Raila is reported to have urged Sakaja to address the grievances raised by MCAs, particularly the release of bursary funds, while pledging further dialogue with both majority and minority leaders.
With the impeachment drive gathering unprecedented bipartisan support in the county assembly, today’s meeting at JOOF will be critical in shaping Sakaja’s immediate political survival.
